Decimal Hours for Payroll: Formula and Complete Conversion Chart
Decimal hours are base-10 hours. Convert minutes by dividing by 60, preserve the exact minute total, and label any rounding separately.
How decimal hours work
Decimal hours express time as a base-10 number. Divide minutes by 60, then add any whole hours. Thirty minutes is 0.50 hours; it is not 0.30 hours.
Decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes ÷ 60)
For 7 hours 45 minutes, divide 45 by 60 to get 0.75, then add 7. The result is 7.75 decimal hours. For 7 hours 30 minutes, the result is 7.50.
Exact value versus rounded value
Many minute conversions repeat in decimal form. One minute is 0.016666… hours, and 59 minutes is 0.983333… hours. A useful record keeps the original minutes and labels the displayed precision.
- Exact source: the original whole-minute duration.
- Four-place display: useful for seeing more of the calculated fraction, such as 59 → 0.9833.
- Hundredth-hour display: 59 → 0.98.
- Quarter-hour display: a separate rounding choice that must never silently replace raw worked time.
Payroll-oriented examples
Eight hours and 15 minutes is 8.25 hours because 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25. Eight hours and 20 minutes is 8.3333 to four places, or 8.33 to a hundredth. A system that accepts only two decimals may use 8.33, while the original 500 minutes remains the reproducible source.
Rounding policies are set by an employer, payroll system, agreement, or applicable rule, not by the arithmetic itself. HourSimple exposes rounding as a labeled display option and does not determine which policy applies.
Quick quarter-hour reference
