How do you calculate hours worked?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. If the shift crosses midnight, count the end time on the following day before subtracting the break total.

The result keeps exact integer minutes and separately presents hours, minutes, and rounded decimal hours.

Net hours worked = elapsed shift minutes − total break minutes.

Worked example

A shift from 08:00 to 17:00 is 9 elapsed hours; after a 30-minute unpaid break, the result is 8 hours 30 minutes.

Which hours-worked result should you use?

This page is designed for one shift where the practical question is how much time remains after breaks, rather than how many hours appear on a weekly time card.

Net worked time
Use the hours-and-minutes result when breaks should be removed from the elapsed shift.
Decimal export
Use the decimal result for a payroll or invoicing system, while retaining the exact minute result as the audit value.
Elapsed time only
If no break should be deducted, the Hours Between Two Times calculator answers the narrower duration question.
Important cases
  • An earlier end time is treated as the next day.
  • Equal start and end times mean zero unless next day is selected.
Common questions

Are breaks included in hours worked?

Entered breaks are subtracted from elapsed time to produce net worked time.
