Business Days vs. Working Days: How Weekends and Holidays Change a Date Calculation

In a generic date calculator, business days and working days are included calendar dates after selected weekend days and manually entered holidays are removed.

The terms can have specialized meanings in a contract, organization, or jurisdiction. A generic calculator should therefore show its assumptions rather than claiming to know a regional calendar it does not contain.

Working days = included calendar days − weekend days − entered weekday holidays

Start and end date choices

Whether the endpoints count can change the answer by one or two days. For a Monday-through-Friday range, including both endpoints produces five included weekdays. Excluding the start produces four; excluding both produces three.

State the endpoint rule whenever the result is used for a schedule or deadline. “Between” is ambiguous unless inclusion is explicit.

Weekend configuration

Saturday and Sunday are common weekend selections, but they are not universal. A transparent calculator lets the user choose any weekend days. The date engine then classifies each included date against that selection.

A holiday that falls on a selected weekend is already excluded and must not be subtracted a second time.

Manual holidays and regional calendars

HourSimple currently accepts manually entered holiday dates. It does not automatically supply federal, provincial, state, or local holidays. That limitation is intentional: regional pages should launch only when the calculator has a maintained dataset with jurisdiction, year, official holiday name, date, source, and last-updated information.

Until such a dataset exists, enter the dates that apply to the calculation and review the excluded-day list in the result.

Example breakdown

A 31-day included range with eight configured weekend dates and no entered weekday holidays contains 23 working days.
